The hunt goes on in the Roannais! By Brian Franklin

I have written about ‘La Loge’ and ‘Le Chasse’ several times in the past. This is a hunting lodge set in marvellously wild and tranquil countryside. The natural habitat of the hunter!

Once more this month I had the tremendous pleasure of visiting this wonderful place for another hunting expedition – mainly duck, but with possibilities of deer and wild boar on the menu!

Owned by a good French friend of mine, Michel, and a couple of his partners, ‘La Loge’ is a regular weekend and holiday paradise for them. Not just for the pleasure of the hunt (le chasse), but for the camaraderie and conviviality of good friends having fun together in an immense wilderness of woodland and lakes. And not forgetting the obligatory French hunter’s occasional barbeque and regional cuisine served in the open air under the shade of the trees.

So when I was offered the recent opportunity to join in on another duck shoot I didn’t hesitate. A glorious sunny day, plenty of flying ducks, and a hearty luncheon in amazing surroundings, what more do you want!!! And apart from a successful day’s shooting, my brother-in-law, John, and myself, were given a brace of duck which we plucked and prepared 2 days later for a family evening meal. Life doesn’t get much better than that!
